The fact that the world’s richest country has the shortest life-expectancy of all rich nations clearly shows that the provision of a successful healthcare system is not solely dependent upon a country’s wealth.

Further demonstrating this, a paper published in July 2000 found  that orthodox doctors, hospitals and their treatments are now the third leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by deaths from heart disease and cancer. Authored by Barbara Starfield, MD, the paper showed that between 4 and 18 percent of American patients experience adverse effects in outpatient settings, causing 116 million extra physician visits, 77 million extra prescriptions, 17 million emergency department visits, 8 million hospitalizations, 3 million long-term admissions, 199,000 additional deaths, and $77 billion in extra costs.

With a recent analysis showing that only one in ten medical treatments are backed by high-quality evidence, the need for healthcare reform has clearly never been more urgent. With increasing numbers of diseases now recognized as being triggered or aggravated by a long-term suboptimal micronutrient intake, the implementation of science-based micronutrient therapies into public health policies would decisively shift the focus of healthcare towards truly preventive approaches. Such reform would not only reduce the incidence of diseases, but also their skyrocketing costs.
