Despite the Austrian government having previously made vaccination against COVID-19 mandatory for everyone over the age of 18, around a quarter of its citizens have continued to refuse the injections. Notably, even the threat of heavy fines failed to force people into submission. Faced with widespread public protests and having already suspended the authoritarian policy, the authorities ultimately had no choice but to scrap it completely. Other countries currently implementing or considering such policies will no doubt now be paying close attention to Austria’s experience.
