Published by The Lancet medical journal, this latest report suggests it continues to be “feasible” that SARS-CoV-2 emerged from either a natural spillover or a laboratory incident. Suggesting American scientists could be culpable, it also notes that “independent researchers have not yet investigated” US labs and that the US National Institutes of Health has “resisted disclosing details” of its work.

Significantly, therefore, even prior to the release of this report, the chair of the Covid-19 Commission, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, had stated at a conference in Madrid earlier this year that he was already “pretty convinced” the virus came from a US biotechnology lab. Predictably, of course, this has made Sachs the object of widespread criticism and resulted in calls for him to be removed.

The claim of US involvement is hardly a new one, however. As early as March 2020, Chinese authorities were claiming that the virus was brought to China by members of the US military who had visited Wuhan in October 2019. With Italian scientists having since found antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in blood samples taken in September 2019, and Chinese researchers suggesting the virus was similarly circulating in the US at this time, it now seems likely that the pandemic may have started earlier than originally thought.

To learn how the late French scientist Professor Luc Montagnier was one of the first to state that the coronavirus was created in a laboratory, see this page on our website.
