The third leading cause of death worldwide, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the collective name for a group of lung conditions that cause breathing difficulties. It includes conditions such as emphysema and chronic bronchitis. According to the World Health Organization, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease caused 3.23 million deaths in 2019.

One of a growing number of health problems that are known to be associated with low levels of vitamin D, supplementation with vitamin D has been found to reduce the risk of moderate or severe exacerbation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Levels of vitamin A and vitamin K have also been shown to be important. Research suggests consumption of these nutrients is associated with a reduced risk of patients developing emphysema.

Other nutrients known to be beneficial include magnesium, zinc, coenzyme Q10, and antioxidants. Individualized nutrition therapy has been shown to be fundamental to improving quality of life in the treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
