The US government is poised to announce a multimillion-dollar investment in mRNA vaccines for H5N1 bird flu. The move comes as the virus continues to spread in mammals, threatening a new pandemic if it makes the jump to humans.

This initiative involves the US government’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) negotiating a deal with Moderna to fund human trials of an experimental mRNA bird flu vaccine, with a commitment to later potentially stockpile millions of doses. The H5N1 bird flu virus has a 50 percent fatality rate in humans and has caused over 400 deaths over the past 20 years.

The virus’s recent spread into US cattle and its ability to infect a variety of mammals have heightened concerns about its potential to mutate and spread among humans. In addition to Moderna, the US government is also said to be in talks with Pfizer about developing an mRNA vaccine for the virus. Having already profited massively from the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine makers are increasingly eyeing the H5N1 bird flu virus as their next potential money-spinner.
