In Greece, the Supreme Court’s Public Prosecution Office is to submit a case file to the Greek Parliament concerning an ongoing probe into charges that drug firm Novartis paid bribes in order to receive preferential treatment. Greek lawmakers will decide whether eight former ministers and two ex-premiers should be prosecuted for their alleged roles in the affair.

COMMENT

Previously, in 2016 Novartis agreed to pay $25 million to settle a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission case that claimed the company had bribed doctors in China to prescribe its drugs. In the latest allegations, investigators believe Novartis paid Greek doctors to prescribe its drugs at high prices and that it bribed politicians in return for patronage. The investigators say this could have cost Greece billions of euros during a financial crisis that has seen the country’s unemployment rate rise to almost 21 percent, with consequent hardship on millions of people.

The Greek allegations aside, it is now undeniable that the pharmaceutical “business with disease” is the largest deception and fraud business in human history. The “health” promised by drug companies is not being delivered to millions of patients worldwide. Instead, the causing of side effects, new diseases, and even death by pharmaceutical medicine has become ever-present in our healthcare systems.
